Alum

About the product

Raw mineral alum with multiple uses. Suitable grades are used in personal care and some crafts.

Known benefits and uses of alum

• Grades intended for personal care are used in mineral deodorants to help reduce body odour. Prevention of sweating is not guaranteed.
• Potassium alum has an astringent property and is included in some skin-care and aftershave products.
• Suitable grades are also used as a dye mordant in textiles and some crafts.
• Purity grades and uses differ. A grade suitable for industry is not necessarily suitable for skin or food.

How to use

For personal care: use cosmetic-grade alum only, following the supplier’s instructions, on clean, intact skin. Wet a smooth cosmetic alum stone, glide gently over the skin, then rinse and dry the stone after use. For raw powder, follow the supplier’s preparation and concentration instructions; do not assume it is equivalent to a ready-made deodorant stone. For dyeing and crafts, choose a suitable grade and follow the recipe instructions.

Precautions

For external use appropriate to the material grade only. Patch test and stop if irritation occurs. Avoid cracked or irritated skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Do not use to stop wound bleeding or treat infections. Do not eat or drink. Keep away from children. Alum contains aluminium and is not described as aluminium-free.

Storage

Keep dry and tightly closed, away from moisture.
